Christian Scott, Joe Lovano, Brandford Marsalis, Sax Supreme Quartet with Chris Potter ve Dave Douglas gibi isimlerle birlikte çalışan kaliteli piyanist Lawrence Fields, uzun süredir heyecanla beklenen ilk albümü To The Surface’i, Rhythm N’ Flow Records etiketiyle 2 Şubat tarihinde yayımlayacak.

İlk parça ‘Parachute’ ile birlikte üçlü kayalıklardan aşağı müziği paraşütleri olarak kullanarak süzülüyorlar. Vakti gelip sahnesine kavuştuğunda söyleyecek çok sözü olan bir müzisyenin sözleriyle değil müzikleriyle kendini gösterdiği ahenkli ve çarpıcı bir parça. ‘New Season Blues’ ise mevsim değişkenliği gibi umutlara, yeni bir ruha açılan kapı etkisinde bir parça. Bu parçada Fields’ın muazzam solosu klasik dönemdeki cazın kurucu babaları olan piyanistlerin ışığını taşıyor. Solonun hemen ardından Yasushi Nakamura’nın solocu ve eşlikçi olarak harikalar yarattığını duyuyoruz. Duo bölümlerinde ise Fonville ve Nakamura son derece mukavemetli ve uyumlu bir ikili olduklarını kanıtlıyorlar. 

Moving on parçası Fields’ın kaybettiği bir yakının ardından hissettiği kedere rağmen hayata devam edebilmenin enerjisini taşıyor. Melankoli sarmalına kapılarak dinleyici aşağıya çekmek yerine yükseltmeyi tercih ediyor.

With To The Surface, Fields transferred his traditional approach to playing as an accompanist to a contemporary approach as a composer and bandleader. In his brand new album Fields accompanied by outstanding rhythm section partners Yasushi Nakamura and Corey Fonville.

To The Surface’s not just a technical demonstration of up-tempo pieces follows by one and other, but a passionate, sensitive and honest expression of all the tones of contemporary jazz.

As in the album’s title, we witness the ideas and flows accumulated in Fields’ mind as a companion being brought to the surface. Fields has turned the creation story, which could be considered a cliché, into a memorable album with his whirlwind music and his unique approach. With the very first track ‘Parachute‘, the trio floats down the cliffs using music as their parachute. It’s a harmonious and striking track where a musician who has a lot to say when his time comes and he reaches his stage shows himself not with his words but with his music. ‘New Season Blues’, on the other hand, is a piece that opens the door to hopes and a new spirit like the changing of the seasons. In this piece, Fields’ tremendous solo carries the light of the pianists who were the founding fathers of jazz in the classical period. Immediately after the solo, we hear Yasushi Nakamura doing wonders as soloist and accompanist. In the duo sections, Fonville and Nakamura prove to be an extremely resilient and harmonious duo.

Moving on carries Fields’ energy of moving on despite grief after the passing of someone close to Fields. He prefers to lift the listener up instead of dragging them down in a spiral of melancholy.

To The Surface is the first words of Lawrence Fields, who has risen from the category of jazz’s shining stars to the virtuoso pianists of his generation, in his own words as a band leader. Fields prefers to say what he has to say on To The Surface in a very determined and remarkable way. And this new beginning is a glorious harbinger that Fields’ new music is on the way, which will leave his listeners in awe.
