David Murray’s recently issued album via Intakt Records, Seriana Promethea, recorded under extraordinary conditions of pandemic has a similar character with the Decameron. At this time the stories are told musically by three of the prominent storytellers of the day. Collaborative unit, In Common that was founded in 2017 under the leadership of Walter Smith III and Mathew Stevens, continues its tradition of bringing together great names in their third album, just like their previous ones. In this third edition In Common 3, improviser, pianist and composer Kris Davis, who has accomplished successful works with Pyroclastic Records, takes the piano duty, also two trailblazer giants Dave Holland and Terri Lyne Carrington has been invited to join the crew.
Young reeds player Caleb Wheeler Curtis, whose evolution I have been watching with great pleasure, continues to amaze his audience. He is not afraid to dive into the depths of an ocean of sounds waiting to be discovered, and his music reflects the joy of a child who is surprised at every new discovery. The recent album is no exception. Heatmap is due out July 15, 2022 via Imani Records, the home of his two previous solo albums – Brothers (2018) and Ain’t No Storm (2021). The quartet is top drawer, with Orrin Evans on piano, Eric Revis on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums.
Every death is a tragedy, but the unexpected loss of a young person is even more shocking. Saxophonist Keith Oxman is a well-known musician and has been teaching at the East High School’s music department in Denver for over 25 years. He finds the opportunity to share his experiences with young musicians, whose names we will hear in the future, among the students he teaches. Jerry Teekens Jr, son of Gerry Teekens who is the founder of Criss Cross Jazz is current manager of the label. When Gerry Teekens died in 2019 at the age of 84, he left behind an independent record label that was appreciated by the entire jazz world. As being truly admirers of the label, we wanted to have a short interview with Jerry Teekens Jr about yesterday, today and the future of Criss Cross Jazz. Thanks to Jerry for such a clear and frank answers. We hope that this interview will portray beloved label’s recent situation and future plans to its followers and jazz lovers.
