Lakecia Benjamin: Phoenix Reimagined (Ropeadope 2024)
Lackecia Benjamin 2010 yılının başından beri New York caz sahnesinde isminden sıklıkla söz ettiren altoculardan ve grup liderlerinden biri ama asıl yükselişini 2023 tarihli Phoenix ile yapmıştı. Canlı kayıt Phoenix Reimagined, Ropeadope etiketiyle 12 Temmuz tarihinde yayımlandı. Brooklyn’deki Spoon, The Black Keys, Hinds, Son Lux, Toshi Reagon, Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade, Mark Guiliana, Chris Potter, John Pattitucci, Cecile McLorin, Mary Halvorsen, Nels Cline, Vijay Iyer, Theo Croker, Max Richter, Bang on a Can gibi isimlerin de kayıt aldığı tanınmış The Bunker’de kaydedilen kayıtta Benjamin, ilk defa kaydettiği canlı albümde de güçlü ve dayanımlı olduğunu kanıtlarcasına kudretli ve sıkı çalıyor. 11 parçadan oluşan albümde Phoenix yeniden yaratılırken üç yeni parça da albümde yerini almış.
Phoenix Reimagined albümünde Zaccai Curtis piyanoda, Elias Bailey basta, EJ Strickland davulda Benjamin’e eşlik etmiş. Konuk sanatçılar John Scofield, Randy Brecker ve Jeff Tain Watts ile Kat Dyson, Richie Goods, Ray Angry, Melodie Ray gibi isimler farklı parçalarda yer almışlar. Bu sanatçıların dokunuşları albümün müzikal rengini biraz değiştirmiş. Phoenix’de dinlediğimiz kan kırmızı şiddetli müzik daha da çeşitlenmiş. Özellikle Scofield’ın yerine hiç bir şey konulamaz füzyon stili gitarı ve Brecker’In keskin tonu canlının atmosferine farklı bir hava katmış. Benjamin’in R&B türlere yatkınlığı bildiğimiz için Melodie Ray’in vokaliyle ile birlikte dinlediğimiz Let Go bizim için bir sürpriz değil. Bu parçanın canlı performanslarında seyirciyi nasıl ateşleyeceğini merak ediyorum.
Yayınlanmasının üzerinden henüz 1-2 yıl geçmiş olmasına rağmen yapısı, akıcılığı, tekrarları, soloları ve moral veren duygusuyla çok yakın bir gelecekte bir caz klasiği olacağına emin olduğum New Mornings, Coltrane’in ruhunun Benjamin tarafından giyildiği Trane ve My Favourite Things‘in yanı sıra Mercy gibi akılda kalıcı parçalarıyla bence bu albüm Phoenix gibi herkese hayatta olmayı, yaşamayı, sevmeyi, eğlenmeyi, güçlü, özgür ve birlik olmayı öğütleyen canlı bir kayıt.
Albümün kapak fotoğrafları Phoenix’de olduğu gibi Elizabeth Leitzell’e ait ve dizayn da yine Rebecca meek tarafından hazırlanmış.
Albümün en yüksek noktalarından biri Amerikan Skin parçasının girişinde ve Peace is Possible’da Benjamin’in makineli tüfek gibi akıttığı flow’u oldu. Benjamin, altoculuğunun yanında bir MC olarak da iddialı gibi görünüyor. Bu parçaların açık mesajının barış olduğunu bildiğimiz için hip-hop ruhuyla özdeşleştiğini de anlıyoruz.

Lackecia Benjamin is one of the finest altoists and bandleaders who has been making a name for herself in the New York jazz scene since the beginning of 2010, but it was with 2023’s Phoenix that she really took off. The live recording Phoenix Reimagined was released on July 12th via Ropeadope. Recorded at the well-known The Bunker in Brooklyn, where Spoon, The Black Keys, Hinds, Son Lux, Toshi Reagon, Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade, Mark Guiliana, Chris Potter, John Pattitucci, Cecile McLorin, Mary Halvorsen, Nels Cline, Vijay Iyer, Theo Croker, Max Richter, Bang on a Can and others have recorded, Benjamin plays mighty and tight, as if proving that she is strong and durable on her debut live album. The 11-track album features a re-creation of Phoenix and three new tracks.
Phoenix Reimagined features Zaccai Curtis on piano, Elias Bailey on bass and EJ Strickland on drums. Guest artists John Scofield, Randy Brecker and Jeff Tain Watts, as well as Kat Dyson, Richie Goods, Ray Angry, Melodie Ray and others have taken part in different tracks. The touches of these artists changed the musical color of the album a bit. The blood red striking music we heard in Phoenix has become more diverse. Especially Scofield’s irreplaceable fusion style guitar sound and Brecker’s sharp tone added a different atmosphere to the live atmosphere. Since we know Benjamin’s predisposition towards R&B genres, it is no surprise that we listen to Let Go with Benjamin and Melodie Ray’s vocals. I wonder how this track will ignite the audience in their live performances.
With its structure, fluidity, repetitions, solos and uplifting feeling, New Mornings, which I am sure will become a jazz classic in the very near future, despite the fact that it has only been 1-2 years since its release, along with Trane and My Favourite Things, on which Coltrane’s soul is dressed by Benjamin, and catchy tracks such as Mercy, I think this album is a live recording that preaches to be alive, to live, to love, to have fun and to be strong, free and united for everyone like Phoenix.
As with Phoenix, the album cover photographs are taken by Elizabeth Leitzell and the design is by Rebecca Meek.
One of the peek points of the album was Benjamin’s machine gun flow in the intro of American Skin and Peace is Possible. Benjamin seems to be assertive as an MC as well as an alto player. Since we know that the clear message of these tracks is peace, we also understand that he identifies with the spirit of hip-hop.
- After Phoenix, Benjamin continues her journey to the top of the jazz pantheon with Phoenix Reimagined.
