John Surman and Unspoken Words
On June 12, 2024 John Surman and his marvellous team were on the stage of Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall.
Born in 1944, in recognition of his 80th birthday, ECM has recently released Unspoken Words, his December 2022 recording with masterly drummer/percussionist Thomas Stronen, American expat Rob Waring on vibraphone, and guitarist Rob Luft.
After over 100 recordings, almost exclusively on ECM since 1979, countless tours and performances, he continues to perform live though not as often by his own account, making this event a rare treat for the nearly-full house that arrived with anticipation of the sonic delights on offer from this ensemble of percussion, vibes, guitar and saxes from baritone to soprano.
The evening featured in full music from the latest ECM release Unspoken Words. Surman succinctly summarized with enthusiasm and humanity his musical vision, which is universal communication through music…calling to mid Felix Mendelssohn’s title Song Without Words from 1832. The essence of music is unchanging and universal.
Music from the ensemble ranged from the driving intensity of Pebble Dance to ethereal dream-like sequences in pieces such Words Unspoken.
Pebble Dance featured ostinato forms introduced by Waring’s attacking vibes, almost immediately changing gear to a trance-like sequence interrupted by Luft’s guitar-based ostinato colored by his masterfully tasty use of electronic synthesizer and modulations. Just as one settled into this stability came Surman’s soaring soprano sax sounds and shrieks allowing everyone to take flight, as Stronen’s brushes yielded to stick-powered propulsive drumming.
As intensely as the attentive audience was propelled by tunes like Pebble Dance, it was swathed in the spaces created between notes in songs like Words Unspoken which is a prime example of each musician’s embodiment of less is more. As Miles once said “Don’t play what’s there, play what’s not there.”
Each musician had ample space and time to display their solo creative powers. John Surman treated us to his mastery of all his saxophonic range. Waring’s vibe work at times invoked elements of prepared piano. Luft evoked echoes of Terje Rypdal, Bill Connnors and Michael Hedges while tastefully and with touches of humor generating soundscapes by deploying his guitar through an array of electronic devices largely controlled by deft footwork.
Masterful as always, Thomas Stronen, now with over 70 recordings, continues to amaze and delight by creating an orchestral palette despite a relatively small kit, using brushes what seems to be over half the time, continually supporting or embellishing the musical offerings of his partners.
The audience was able to delight in nearly two hours of collaborative music-making with a spirited encore and Surman’s expression of appreciation for the attentive audience, and humanistic description of what music, and Words Unspoken is about.
All in attendance know how precious are these performances, but hope for another appearance by this memorable ensemble of gifted musicians.

A New Writer in Dark Blue Notes: Tali Arik
Recent addition to Dark Blue Notes’ team, Tali Arik is born in 1956 in USA of Turkish parents and is a dual citizen. He studied classical piano beginning age 8 and soon discovered rock then jazz.
First ECM purchase was Keith Jarrett’s Bremen-Lausanne 1973 the year he entered Dartmouth College ABD studying music, Humanities and Sciences. Played piano in his free jazz trio, the Dartmouth Jazz Orchestra, studied and composed electronic music with Jon Appleton.
He was a founding member of The New Music Ensemble playing piano and ARP-2600 specializing in late 20th century music, avant-garde and minimalism. The ensemble included Malcolm Goldstein and Christian Wolff.
He also took classes with the late saxophonist Lucky Thompson and with Bill Cole who is “a rare breed of jazz artist who has focused his efforts on uniting Eastern sounds with the American art form”.
After finishing University he went into medicine with a distinguished career in cardiology for 14 years in Phoenix Arizona the 24 years in Las Vegas Nevada, retiring in May 2024. He realized his childhood dream of moving to Turkiye in May 2024.
Throughout his medical career he continued an active role as listener and sponsor of classical and jazz music by supporting the Phoenix Symphony, SF Jazz, and sponsoring concerts and young artists.

John Surman ve Sözsüz Şarkılar
12 Haziran 2024’te John Surman ve muhteşem ekibi Cemal Reşit Rey Konser Salonu sahnesindeydi.
1944 doğumlu olan Surman, 80. doğum günü anısına ECM tarafından yakın zamanda yayınlanan “Unspoken Words” albümünde, usta davulcu/perküsyonist Thomas Stronen, Amerikalı Rob Waring (vibrafon) ve gitarist Rob Luft ile birlikte yer alıyor.
1979’dan bu yana neredeyse tamamı ECM’de olmak üzere 100’den fazla kayıt, sayısız turne ve performansın ardından, kendi ifadesine göre artık daha az sahne alsa da canlı performans sergilemeye devam ediyor ve bu etkinliği, perküsyon, vibes, gitar ve baritondan sopranoya saksafonlardan oluşan bu topluluğun sunacağı sonik lezzetleri bekleyerek gelen neredeyse dolu bir salon için nadir bir ziyafet haline getiriyor.
Gecede ECM’in son albümü Unspoken Words‘ün tüm paraçaları yer aldı. Surman, müzikal vizyonunu özünde müziğin evrensel iletişim olduğu şeklinde özetledi ve Felix Mendelssohn’un 1832 tarihli “Sözsüz Şarkı” başlığına atıfta bulundu. Müziğin özü değişmez ve evrenseldir.
Topluluğun müziği, Pebble Dance’in itici yoğunluğundan Words Unspoken gibi parçalardaki ruhani rüya benzeri sekanslara kadar uzanıyordu.
Pebble Dance, Waring’in saldırgan vibes’ıyla başlayan ostinato formlarını içeriyor, hemen ardından Luft’un synthesizer ve elektronik modülasyonları ustalıkla kullanmasıyla renklenen gitar temelli ostinato’suyla kesintiye uğrayan trans benzeri bir sekansa geçiş yapıyordu. Tam bu dengeye alışmışken, Surman’ın yükselen soprano saksafon sesleri ve çığlıkları herkesin uçuşa geçmesine izin verirken, Stronen’in fırçaları çubukla çalışan itici davullara teslim oldu.
Dikkatli dinleyiciler Pebble Dance gibi melodilerden ne kadar yoğun şekilde etkilendiyse, Words Unspoken gibi şarkılarda notalar arasında yaratılan boşluklar da her müzisyenin az çoktur anlayışının en iyi örneklerinden biriydi. Miles’ın bir zamanlar dediği gibi “Orada olanı çalma, orada olmayanı çal.”
Her müzisyen solo yaratıcı güçlerini sergilemek için geniş bir alana ve zamana sahipti. John Surman bize saksafon yelpazesindeki tüm ustalığını sundu. Waring’in vibe çalışması zaman zaman hazır piyano unsurlarını çağrıştırdı. İzleyiciler, Surman’ın dikkatli izleyicilere yönelik takdir ifadesinin ardından müziğin ve Words Unspoken’ın ne hakkında olduğuna dair insancıl tanımlamasıyla birlikte yaklaşık iki saatlik ortaklaşa müzik yapımının tadını çıkarabildiler.
Katılan herkes bu performansların ne kadar değerli olduğunu biliyor ve yetenekli müzisyenlerden oluşan bu unutulmaz topluluğun bir kez daha sahneye çıkmasını umuyor.
