Son zamanlarda başucumda, Eve Cornelious & The Chip Crawford Trio grubunun 1999 yılında yayımlanan I Feel Like Some Jazz Today albümü duruyor. Albert Chip Crawford ile 31. İstanbul Caz Festivali’nde tanıştım ve bu albümü, kendisi ülkesine döndükten sonraki sohbetlerimiz sayesinde keşfettim. Dinler dinlemez Eve Cornelious’un sıcak sesi ve parçaları yorumlamadaki ustalığı beni bambaşka diyarlara götürdü.

Caz tarihinin en çok satan albümü denildiğinde, akla ilk olarak Miles Davis’in Kind of Blue albümü gelir ve ardından albümde yer alan efsanevi isimler; Bill Evans, Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers, John Coltrane ve Julian Cannonball Adderley…. Eve Cornelious’un sesinden, Kind of Blue albümünün son parçası olan Flamenco Sketches yorumunu dinleyince, büyülendim.

Parçaya Chip Crawford’un, harika sözler hediye ettiğini öğrendim. Sözleri tamamlaması tamı tamına 6 yıl sürmüş. Eski eşi Eve Cornelious, söz yazarken her zaman kendisine yardımcı olmuş. Ben de Flamenco Sketches parçasına yazılan sözleri; zamanın akışıyla birlikte unutulan güzellikleri, kaybolan masumiyeti ve hayatın anlam arayışını vurgulayabilmek adına, masalsı bir dille Türkçeye çevirmek istedim. Bazı müzik eleştirmenleri sözlerin, müziğin saf formunu bozduğunu söyleseler de, ben sözlerin müziğe anlam ve duygu kattığına inananlardanım. Bu parçada, özellikle flamenko dansının anlatıldığı bölümde sözler, sanatın insan üzerindeki iyileştirici gücüne vurgu yapıldığını hissettirdi bana.

“Vaktiyle, iyilik timsali insanların ve hatıraların altın çağında, dilden dile bir masal dolaşırdı. Ne var ki, bu masalın ezgisi pek çok kulaktan çabuk silindi. Bir yıldız gökyüzünde parladı, sonra eski bir İspanyol kasabasında, usulca denizin kucağına bıraktı kendini. Kasabanın sakinleri tatlı bir melodi duymak için, yumuşak bir sesle konuşan bir adamın etrafında toplandılar. Duyulan o hoş ses, güçlü ve berraktı. Gönülleri huzurla doldu, akıllarında hiçbir soru işareti kalmadı. Daha fazlasını istemeye ne gerek vardı? Hayatın planını anlamamız için her şey değişmeli, büyümeli ve gelip geçmeli. Sıra bize geldiğinde, parıldayan bir an yakaladığımızda sevinçle dolarız. Lakin bazıları, sahip oldukları hazineleri paylaşmak yerine, onları sadece sergilemeyi tercih ederler. “Dünya hepimizin,” diye haykırabilir miyiz? Evrenin, mavi ve sarı renkte parlayan, kuyruklu bir yıldızın şarkısını dinlediğine inanabilir miyiz? Yoksa sonsuza dek hayal kırıklığı içinde mi yaşayacağız? Ah, Tanrım…

Bir kadın ve bir erkek, elleri birbirine kenetlenmiş halde, zarifçe dans ediyorlar. İşte flamenko! Endülüs’ün sıcak havasını taşıyan İspanyol dansçılar. İki kadın ve iki yakışıklı erkek, birbirlerini herkesten iyi anlıyorlar. Ay ışığı altında defalarca dans ediyorlar. Kadının duruşunda, olağanüstü bir zarafet var. Sol adım, sağ adım, yakınlaşıp uzaklaşma… İşte flamenko! İspanyol dansçılar, gecenin ritmini ve coşkusunu anlatıyorlar. Şimdi başlıyoruz, Oleo gibi hızlı bir tempoda. Her şey bir rüya, biliyorsunuz. Hayal gücü, bu dansın gizli koreografisi. Ansızın yer, ruhumla alay eden bir gök gürültüsü gibi sarsıldı. Ne bir insan, ne de bir melek… Ben kimim? Yorgun, yenilmiş ve reddedilmiş bir piyonum. Keman gibi çalındım. Bu bilmecenin cevabı ne? Sadece kaybolmak mı? Şarkının izini sürdün mü? Sana yolu gösterdi mi?”

Eve Cornelious ve eski eşi Chip Crawford’un “I Feel Like Some Jazz Today” albümü, caz standartları ve özgün eserlerin etkileyici bir karışımını sunuyor. Cornelious’un vokali, Betty Carter, Carmen McCrae ve Ella Fitzgerald’dan ilham alıyor ve kendi özgün tarzıyla harmanlanıyor. Cornelious, şarkı söylerken hem teknik olarak çok iyi, hem de dinleyiciye duygularını geçirmeyi başarıyor. The Chip Crawford Trio da ona müzikleriyle harika bir şekilde eşlik ediyor. Trio usta müzisyenlerden oluşuyor, piyanoda Crawford, basta Michael Howell ve davulda Alvin Atkinson. Albümde öne çıkan parçalar arasında, Miles Davis’in yorumundan uyarlanan My Funny Valentine, önceden de vurguladığım üzere, benim favorim olan Flamenco Sketches ve I Love Paris/April in Paris ikilisi var. Goodman/Christian’ın ”Airmail Special” yorumu da coşkulu ve eğlenceli.

Gelelim Chip Crawford ve Eve Cornelious’un hikayesine. Crawford ve Cornelious, 2001 yılında Kuzey Karolina’nın Durham şehrinden ayrılıp, caz müziğine olan tutkularının peşinde, New York City’ye taşındılar. Dizzy’s Coca Cola, Blue Note ve Smoke gibi şehrin önde gelen caz kulüplerinde sahne aldılar. Büyük orkestralarla Avrupa turnelerine katıldılar. Hatta 2006 yılında Türkiye’de de konser verme fırsatı buldular.

Eve Cornelious, New Jersey’nin Newark şehrinde doğdu ve sesini çok küçük yaşta keşfetti. Kardeşlerinin alaylarına karşın, şarkı söylemek için en sevdiği yer olan banyoya sığınırdı. Banyodaki yankılı sese hayran kalan Cornelious, bu sesin “reverb” olarak adlandırıldığını sonradan öğrendi. Hampton Üniversitesi İşletme Bölümü’nden mezun olduktan sonra müziğe yönelen Cornelious, Kuzey Karolina Merkez Üniversitesi’nde (NCCU) caz müziği eğitimi aldı. Ardından, Doğu Karolina Üniversitesi’nin ilk caz vokal öğretmeni olarak görev yaptı. Kariyeri boyunca Ramsey Lewis, Chucko Valdez, Jon Hendrick’s, Mulgrew Miller, Norman Connors, Winard Harper, Mark Whitfield, Roy Hangrove ve eski eşi Chip Crawford gibi önemli müzisyenlerle çalışma fırsatı buldu.

Kuzey Kaliforniyalı piyanist Chip Crawford ise, Gregory Porter ile uzun yıllardır aynı sahneyi paylaşıyor. 1972’de Berklee Müzik Okulu’ndan mezun olan Crawford, yüksek lisansını 1989’da Kuzey Karolina Üniversitesi’nde tamamladı. Duke Üniversitesi’nde caz piyano dersleri verdi. Crawford ve Porter’ın yolları, Harlem’deki 149. Sokak’ta bulunan St. Nicholas Caddesi’ndeki St. Nicks Pub adlı kulüpte, doğaçlama bir performans sırasında kesişti. Chip Crawford, bu buluşma hakkında şunları söylüyor: “Gregory Porter ile tanışmak harika bir deneyimdi. Onunla olmasaydım, hayatımda bu kadar çok şey başaramaz ve göremezdim.”

2014’te “Liquid Spirit” ve 2017’de “Take Me to the Alley” albümleriyle iki Grammy Ödülü kazanan Gregory Porter ise Crawford için şu sözleri dile getiriyor: “Chip, John Coltrane’in müziğini, kilise müziğini ve R&B’yi benzersiz bir şekilde harmanlayabiliyor. Aramızda adeta ruhani bir bağ var.”

Albert Chip Crawford, sevgi dolu ve samimi bir insan. Onunla politika, sosyoloji, müzik ve dostluğun önemi üzerine uzun sohbetlerimiz oluyor. Yıllar önce yazdığım bir şiiri İngilizceye çevirip onunla paylaştım. Sevgili Chip bu şiiri besteledi ve böylece aramızdaki dostluk bir şarkıya dönüştü. Bu güzel dostluğumuzun meyvesi olan bu özel şarkıyı, sizlerle en kısa sürede buluşturmak için sabırsızlanıyorum. Şiirimin bir kısmını sizlerle de paylaşmak istiyorum:

I journeyed to your heart’s own light.
Through clouds I slipped, a sunbeam’s kiss,p
To love’s embrace, in tender bliss.

A feather’s dance, a whispered grace,

One of My Favorite Albums: Eve Cornelious & The Chip Crawford Trio – I Feel Like Some Jazz Today

Once upon a time, there was a jazz group called Eve Cornelious & The Chip Crawford Trio. Recently, their 1999 album, I Feel Like Some Jazz Today, has been resting by my bedside. I met Albert Chip Crawford at the 31st Istanbul Jazz Festival, and I discovered this album through our conversations after he returned to his country. As soon as I listened to the album, Eve Cornelious’s warm voice and her mastery in interpreting the pieces transported me to completely different realms. When the best-selling jazz album of all time is mentioned, Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue album comes to mind first, followed by the legendary names featured on the album: Bill Evans, Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers, John Coltrane, and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley.

I was mesmerized when I heard Eve Cornelious’s interpretation of Flamenco Sketches, the last track of the Kind of Blue album. I learned that Chip Crawford had written wonderful lyrics to the piece. It took him exactly six years to complete the lyrics. His ex-wife, Eve Cornelious, always helped him with songwriting. I translated the lyrics written for Flamenco Sketches into Turkish with a fairytale-like language, to emphasize the beauties forgotten with the passage of time, the lost innocence, and the search for meaning in life. Although some music critics say that the lyrics disrupt the pure form of music, I am among those who believe that lyrics add meaning and emotion to music. In this piece, especially in the part where the flamenco dance is described, the lyrics made me feel that the healing power of art on people is emphasized. Here is the lyrics:

“To hear a very olden story of lovely people and days gone by. Too early, too soon it must have gone right over many a head. The star shut through the sky, then fell down into the sea so gently in an old Spanish town. The people gathered around to see a man that softly speaks and hear a melody.The sound so sweet that you hear is strong and clean. People feel the serenity, contended they have no questions. Is there a need to wish for anymore? Everthing must change and grow, come and go for us to understand that life plays his hand and plan. We love to take our turn just for a chance to show we can. Some of them even don’t want to share, only showing a certain sign of what there is. Can people simply say that all the world is yours and mine, that’s all it is. Trusting that the universe is listening for a comet that is glistening with a blue and yellow train. May anybody else could tell must we live in such frustration in the end once again? Lord! A woman and a man take eachother’s hand and gently sway. That’s flamenco! Spanish dancers with an Andalusian flair. Two women and a two very handsome man, they understand eachother that noone can. The many times they dance together in this magical disguise of moonlit nights and Spanish eyes, a very extraordinary quality in her. The step left then right, moving close then pulling tight, that’s the flamenco! Spanish dancers tell a story of the rhythm of the night and popping. Oh here we go, it’s fast as playing Oleo. It’s all a dream you know, imagination’s the secret choreography. Suddenly the ground shook just like thunder laughing at my soul. Not a man, not an angel. Who am I? Tired, beaten and rejected. I’m a pawn that’s been selected. Played like a fiddle. What’s the answer to the riddle? Just fadimg away. Have you followed the song? Has it shown you the way?”

Eve Cornelious and her ex-husband Chip Crawford’s I Feel Like Some Jazz Today album offers an impressive mix of jazz standards and original works. Cornelious’s vocals are inspired by Betty Carter, Carmen McCrae, and Ella Fitzgerald, and are blended with her own unique style. Cornelious is both technically excellent and successful in conveying her emotions to the listener while singing. The Chip Crawford Trio also accompanies her wonderfully with their music. This trio consists of master musicians on piano, bass, and drums. Crawford on piano, Michael Howell on bass, and Alvin Atkinson on drums. Standout tracks on the album include My Funny Valentine, adapted from Miles Davis’s interpretation, Flamenco Sketches, which is my favorite as I mentioned before, and the I Love Paris/April in Paris duo. The Goodman/Christian’s Airmail Special interpretation is also lively and fun.

Now, let’s talk about Chip Crawford and Eve Cornelious’s story. Crawford and Cornelious left Durham, North Carolina, in 2001 and moved to New York City in pursuit of their passion for jazz music. They performed at the city’s leading jazz clubs such as Dizzy’s Coca Cola, Blue Note, and Smoke. They participated in European tours with large orchestras. They even had the opportunity to give concerts in Turkey in 2006.

Eve Cornelious was born in Newark, New Jersey, and discovered her voice at a very young age. Despite her siblings’ teasing, she took refuge in the bathroom, her favorite place to sing. Fascinated by the echoing sound in the bathroom, Cornelious later learned that this sound was called “reverb.” After graduating from Hampton University with a degree in Business Administration, Cornelious turned to music and studied jazz music at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). She then served as the first jazz vocal teacher at East Carolina University. Throughout her career, she had the opportunity to work with important musicians such as Ramsey Lewis, Chucko Valdez, Jon Hendrick’s, Mulgrew Miller, Norman Connors, Winard Harper, Mark Whitfield, Roy Hangrove, and her ex-husband Chip Crawford.

Northern California pianist Chip Crawford has been sharing the stage with Gregory Porter for many years. A 1972 graduate of Berklee College of Music, Crawford completed his master’s degree at the University of North Carolina in 1989. He also taught jazz piano at Duke University. Crawford and Porter’s paths crossed during an impromptu performance at a club called St. Nick’s Pub on St. Nicholas Avenue on 149th Street in Harlem. Chip Crawford says about this meeting, ”Meeting Gregory Porter was a wonderful experience. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t have achieved and seen so much in my life.” Gregory Porter, who won two Grammy Awards with his albums ‘Liquid Spirit’ in 2014 and ‘Take Me to the Alley’ in 2017, says the following about Crawford; ”Chip can uniquely blend John Coltrane’s music, church music, and R&B. There’s almost a spiritual connection between us.”

Albert Chip Crawford is a loving and sincere person. We have long conversations with him about politics, sociology, music, and the importance of friendship. I translated one of my poems into English and shared it with him. Dear Chip composed this poem, and thus our friendship turned into a song. I can’t wait to share this special song, the fruit of our beautiful friendship, with you as soon as possible. I would like to share a part of my poem with you as well:
