Still in her early 20s, British saxophonist Emma Rawicz is a musician who has a great command of her instrument and truly loves and respects music. The audience watching Rawicz on the stage of the 32nd Akbank Jazz Festival at Akbank Sanat, where we went for the first time in a long time, on the evening of September 27, witnessed perhaps one of the most precious moments in modern jazz history. Because this is Rawicz’s first concert outside the UK. First of all, let’s congratulate for her success. More importantly, let’s thank the Akbank Jazz Festival for putting such a young musician on the festival stage by trusting her vision.
Having spent his 35 years-long career gloriously, very productively, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba recorded another exquisite recording with Matt Brewer and Eric Harland, two great musicians of the highest caliber of their generation, after the Grammy-winning Skyline he recorded with two legends Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette last year. If you ask me, this album is likely to receive Grammy nomination next year and very likely would win again. Especially the improvised solos are the kind that will showcase Rubalcaba’s flamboyant style.
Chicago based guitarist Tim Fitzgerald is a musician who admires Wes Montgomery very much. Is there anything more beautiful than walking by stepping on the steps of the musician you love? To this end, he has been working for more than 20 years to analyse Montgomery’s idiosyncratic, stylish and sensuous music.
Super Blue The London Sessions is a candidate to be a target for traditionalists who know Elling for his traditional jazz-related works. But Elling is a vocalist who has the courage to take the criticism to the fullest and walk his way confidently.
Sun Ra Arkestra have shared ‘Somebody Else’s Idea’, the lead single from their new album Living Sky, which will be released on 7th October via Omni Sound.
They’ve been making flamboyant music from day one, but this record is probably the best quality the band has ever recorded.
Night Vision released on 10th June 2022 via Blackstairs Records. Carole Nelson on piano, voice and soprano saxophone, Cormac O’Brien on bass and Dominic Mullan on drums. All three contributed to write 10 original tracks.
Drummer’s compositions are often full of energy, but Ari Hoenig is probably one of the most wildest fighters in jazz drumming. As powerful as a performer, he is as skilled as a composer in producing compositions with harmonic and melodic depth.
Leaning In is a good album. With the harmonic richness, coherence and elegance that will the real manning we can use the word beautiful.
David Murray’s recently issued album via Intakt Records, Seriana Promethea, recorded under extraordinary conditions of pandemic has a similar character with the Decameron. At this time the stories are told musically by three of the prominent storytellers of the day. Seriana Promethea can readily be regarded among the ones that perfectly represents the mood of the catastrophic times, just as the decameron represents that of the age of plague in medieval times.
