Veteran jazz bassist Steve Swallow has carved out a special place in jazz history throughout his life dedicated to music, both through his solo projects and his collaborations with artists such as Paul Bley, Art Farmer, Jimmy Giuffre, Gary Burton, John Scofield, and Carla Bley. Swallow, who established the electric bass as a respected instrument on the jazz scene, says that he has been able to overcome the weariness of turning 85 and what is likely an increasingly difficult life through the healing power of music, noting that music has always been a source of support for him on days that now feel too long. Music, his faithful companion to whom he has devoted everything for 66 years, is now coming to his aid.
The new Steve Swallow album Winter Songs, which emerged organically, marks the first leader album he has recorded in over a decade. Together with Mike Rodriguez, Chris Cheek, Gil Goldstein, Steve Cardenas, and Adam Nussbaum, he has created an album that is exceptionally harmonious, patient, and prioritizes tranquility.
One of the qualities that made Swallow a great musician was that he was a modernist far ahead of his time. Upon joining the Jimmy Giuffre 3, his progressive musical sensibility allowed him to blend with Giuffre to a surprising degree. While working with Gary Burton in the 1960s, he transitioned from acoustic bass to electric bass. His harmonious musical partnership with his life partner Carla Bley, which he maintained until the end of Bley’s life after joining her group in 1978, as well as his unparalleled friendship with John Scofield, who has been his companion since 1975, indicate that Swallow was not only a consistent musician but also a strong, humble, and harmonious individual in terms of his personal relationships.
On the 2011 recorded album Into The Woodwork, Steve Swallow aimed to create a richer, more layered soundscape by writing new compositions for saxophonist Chris Cheek and guitarist Steve Cardenas, whom he had met through Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop Band. Joining this duo were “wild card” musicians—organist Carla Bley and drummer Jorge Rossy—who added an element of surprise and fun to the music. At the time, Swallow emphasized the importance of infusing the music’s spirit with humor, stating, “A good sense of humor is crucial both before and after the red light goes out.” For this album, he received praise for the rise of electric bass in jazz, the distinct colors Carla Bley brought with her organ, and his focus on composition and arrangement rather than lengthy solos.
Winter Songs, (Featuring Chris Cheek and Steve Cardenas who also performed on the “Into The Woodwork” album ) is out on June 26 via ECM Records, stands out for its cohesive soundscape where composition flows as naturally as life itself. In Swallow’s own words, it wasn’t created to achieve a specific goal, but has become a goal in itself. The nine distinct yet cohesive untitled tracks, with their fluid swings and profound ballads, evoke a soundscape and sense of interaction reminiscent of chamber music. At the same time, it fits seamlessly into ECM Records’ familiar sonic identity.
