Sanat yalnızca entellektüeller için üretilmez ama bir sanat formu olarak caz yıllardan beri karmaşıklığın, anlaşılmazlığın ve üst zevklere sahip zümrenin eğlencesi olarak algılanagelmiştir. Bunda özellikle ülkemizde (bazen de dünyada) yaratılan algının da payı var. Ama benim burada üzerinde durmak istediğim, Giotto’nun on dördüncü yüzyılın başında, Padova’da bulunan Scovengni Şapeli’ndeki Golgota Yolu ve Ölü İsa’ya Ağıt eserlerinin okuma yazma bilmeyen fakat görsel olarak anlatılan hikayeleri tanıyıp duygudaşlık kurabilen insanlar için resmedilmesi gibi bir sanat formunun her kesimce algılanırlığının değeri. Hisseden, sakin bir ruh, sanatla kelimelerden ve cümlelerden arınmış bir şekilde bağ kurabilmelidir.
Ticari nedenlerle West Coast Jazz’ın poster yakışıklılarından biri olması yanından trompetçi ve grup lideri sıfatıyla Chet Baker, her dönemde cazın en efsanevi isimlerinden biri olagelmiştir. Konuyu yalnızca ticari başarı olarak değerlendirmek çok yanlış. Bunun nedeni bana göre Baker’ın akıllara zarar bir enstrümantalist ve müzisyen oluşunda değil gerek zaman zaman kullandığı duygusal vokalinin gerekse uzun formlar halinde kullandığı sakin çalışının daha ziyade yukarıda verdiğim örneğe emsal nitelikte kalple duyumsanır bir yapıda olmasındadır. Baker’ın müziği ile yarattığı genel etki hem caz ile yeni tanışmış hem de ön yargılarından arınmış müzmin bir caz severin ön yargılarını kırabilecek nitelikte.
Özellikle cazın sakin yüzüyle vakit geçirmek isteyen bir müzikseverseniz bu albüm tam size göre.
Geçtiğimiz günlerde yayımlanan sessiz gecelerin eşlikçisi Chet Baker albümü Late Night Jazz, bir hayalin gerçeğe dönmüş hali. Daha evvel Garbarek, Rypdal ve Stenson gibi isimlerle çalışma şansı bulmuş Norveçli şair Jan Erik Vold, ruhunu enstrümana üflemeyi başarabilmiş cazın büyük şairlerinden biri olarak Chet Baker’ı bir caz şiiri projesi için Oslo’ya davet etmeyi hayal ediyordu. Şubat 1988’in başında kendisini davet etme şansı yakalamak gerekiyordu, çünkü o dönem Oslo’da bir konseri vardı.
Baker, Oslo’ya her gidişinde adet edindiği üzere 1963 yılından beri arkadaş oldukları caz gazetecisi Randi Hultin’in evinde birkaç ekstra gün kalmayı planlamıştı ve bu teklife olumlu yanıt vermişti. Stüdyo, kaydın prodüktörü Jon Larsen tarafından çok kısa bir süre içerisinde mucize eseri hazır edilmişti. Ekip ayın 16’sında Baker’ın kaldığı otel Ann de France’da buluştular. Baker’ın yanında favori müzisyenleri piyanist Egil Kapstad, basçı Terje Venaas, gitarist Philip Catherine’in yanı sıra şair Vold ve caz gazetecisi Hultin ile birlikte Italyan flüt sanatçısı ve gitarist Nicola Stilo da yer alıyordu. Altın çağa özgü stilde bir caz buluşması: dostlar buluşmuş, mucize gerçekleşmiş.
Elemental Music etiketiyle yayımlanan bu güzel eserin kayıt kalitesi, ECM’in kaliteli ses imzasının gerisindeki titiz kulak ses mühendisi Jan Erik Kongshaug’un dokunuşuyla birlikte mükemmel olarak nitelendirilebilir.
Late Night Jazz, Hoady Carmichael bestesi Skylark, Egil Kapstad bestesi Children’s Waltz ve Ned Washington ile Victor Young bestesi My Foolish Heart baladlarının yarattığı etkiyle ismiyle müsemma gece cazı havasında hissediliyor ve özellikle hayatın yavaşladığını hissettiğimiz gece dinlemeleri için biçilmiş kaftan bir sakinlik seviyesinde. Bu albümü favori albümleriniz arasına konumlandırmanız için cazda yıllar geçiren bir müziksever olmanıza gerek yok, kalbinizi melodinin akış yönüne bırakmanız yeterli. Chet Baker Late Night Jazz, The Beautiful Companion of The Silent Night
Art is not only produced for intellectuals, jazz as an art form has been perceived for years as a form of complexity, incomprehensibility and entertainment for those with high tastes. The perception created especially in our country (and sometimes in the world) also has a share in this. But what I want to focus on here is the value of the perceptibility of an art form such as Giotto’s The Way to Golgotha and Requiem for the Dead in the Scovengni Chapel in Padova at the beginning of the fourteenth century for people who are illiterate but who can recognize and empathize with the stories told visually. A feeling, calm soul should be able to connect with art in a way that is free of words and phrases.
Besides being one of the poster boys of West Coast Jazz, Chet Baker has always been one of the most legendary names in jazz as a trumpeter and bandleader. It’s a mistake to think of it only in terms of commercial success. The reason for this, in my opinion, is not that Baker is a mind-blowing instrumentalist and musician, but rather that his emotional vocals, which he sometimes uses, and his calm playing, which he uses in long forms, are more like the example I gave above, in a structure that is felt with the heart. The overall effect Baker creates with his music is capable of breaking the prejudices of both a jazz lover who is new to jazz and a jazz lover who has already gotten rid of his prejudices.
The recently released Chet Baker album Late Night Jazz, the companion of quiet nights, is a dream come true. Norwegian poet Jan Erik Vold, who had previously worked with Garbarek, Rypdal and Stenson, dreamed of inviting Chet Baker, one of the great jazz poets who managed to breathe his soul into this instrument, to Oslo for a jazz poetry project. The chance to invite him at the beginning of February 1988 was necessary because he had a concert in Oslo at that time. Baker had planned to stay a few extra days at the home of jazz journalist Randi Hultin, with whom he had been friends since 1963, as was his custom whenever he traveled to Oslo, and he responded positively to the offer. The studio was miraculously prepared in a very short time by Jon Larsen, the producer of the recording. The crew met on the 16th at Baker’ regular hotel the Ann de France. Baker was joined by his favorite musicians, pianist Egil Kapstad, bassist Terje Venaas, guitarist Philip Catherine, poet Vold and jazz journalist Hultin, as well as Italian flutist and guitarist Nicola Stilo. A jazz reunion in the style of the golden age: friends met, a miracle happened.
Released via Elemental Music label, the recording quality of this beautiful work can be described as excellent, with the precious touch of the meticulous ear of sound engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug behind ECM’s quality sound signature. Late Night Jazz, with the influence of Hoady Carmichael’s Skylark, Egil Kapstad’s Children’s Waltz and Ned Washington and Victor Young’s ballad My Foolish Heart, has the feel of the aptly named late night jazz, and is the perfect level of calmness for nighttime listening, especially when life seems to slow down. You don’t need to be a music lover who has spent years in jazz to place this album among your favorite albums, just let your heart go with the flow of the melody. Chet Baker and his friends will guide you into an eternity that will make you dream.
Especially if you are a music lover who wants to spend time with the quieter side of jazz, this album is for you.
The album features jazz standards, Norwegian folk songs, original compositions by Egil Kapstad and poems by the Norwegian poet Vold, seamlessly woven into the music. One of Chet Baker’s last legacies as a jazz icon is captured not only in the brilliance of his musical expression, but also in an intimate and easy-to-connect with music that, despite his personal struggles, still adds value to life.
