Set for release on May 8, 2026, via Edition Records, this album once again demonstrates that Potter is not only a powerful improviser but also a formidable composer.
The album’s inspiration is the story of John Brown, a radical abolitionist who fought for the abolition of slavery in the United States. What made Brown a radical was his stance advocating the use of violence in this struggle. Brown’s most famous act was the raid he carried out on the Harpers Ferry armory in Virginia in 1859. He carried out this raid with the aim of arming the slaves and sparking a major uprising, but it failed. He was subsequently tried, found guilty of treason, murder, and incitement to rebellion, and executed. This event brought to light the deep-seated contradictions, violence, and ideals at the heart of America.
The sense of awareness long present in Potter’s music has evolved into a much more distinct dramaturgy in this project. The Americana sensibility that has long characterized Frisell’s guitar tone forms a surprisingly natural connection with the historical fabric of the John Brown narrative.
I know Frisell for his work with that small-town orchestra vibe, so I can say that his presence makes a huge contribution to the resonance the music has for us. Additionally, as a music lover who is deeply interested in both Potter’s and Frisell’s music, I’d like to note that I thoroughly enjoyed the musical chemistry between the two. My favorite thing about this album is that it’s neither a pure Potter album nor a pure Frisell album, it’s somewhere in the most harmonious intersection of the two, which is quite delightful.
On drums is Nate Smith, one of jazz’s most creative rhythmic architects, whose popularity is gaining momentum. Smith’s approach to groove keeps the music’s blues and gospel roots alive while expanding the scope for improvisation.
While bassist Burniss Travis’s solid, deep tone forms the backbone of the ensemble, violinist Sara Caswell adds a lyricism to the music that almost evokes vocals. Caswell’s occasionally nostalgic string touches intertwine with Potter’s saxophone lines, creating the album’s most poetic moments.
Rane Moore, on the clarinet, skillfully sustains the music’s dramatic tension by keeping the harmonic texture both open and flexible.
