Tarih 3 Temmuz 2023, mekân ise caz tarihinin efsanevi adreslerinden New York’taki Blue Note Jazz Club. Londra’da doğup büyüyen genç tuba virtüözü Theon Cross, lider olarak verdiği ilk konser için sahnedeydi. Seyirciler onu, Mercury Ödülü’ne aday gösterilen Sons of Kemet grubunun çekirdek üyelerinden biri olarak zaten tanıyor, coşku doruktaydı. Cross’a sahnede gitar ve basta yakın dostu Nikos Ziarkas, davulda Şikagolu güç kaynağı James Russell Sims ve saksafonda caz panteonunda yerini hak etmiş tenor titanı Isaiah Collier eşlik etti. “Affirmations (Live At Blue Note New York)” albümünde yer alan Greetings parçasında, dörtlünün meditatif intro’su adeta fırtına öncesi bir ses bulutu gibi yükseliyor. Bu sakin açılışın ardından Cross ve Collier’in dakikalarca soluksuz devam eden bilinç akışı, hem salondaki dinleyiciyi hem de beni derinden etkiledi. Bakır nefesli çalgılar ailesinin en geniş üyesi olan tuba, hem kısa ve kesik nefeslerle bölümlenmiş melodilerdeki kıvraklığıyla; hem de uzun nefeslerle kurulan atmosferlerde ise derinliğiyle büyüleyici bir etki yaratıyor. Bu kayıtta bir kez daha fark ediyoruz ki, Cross gibi dahiyane bir figürün enstrümanına getirdiği yaratıcı yaklaşım, tüm bu deneyimi bize güçlü bir şekilde hissettiriyor.
İngiliz caz sahnesinin grime ritimlerini, groove odaklı melodik anlayışını; afrobeat’in enerjisi ve usta Amerikalı caz müzisyenlerinin birinci sınıf icralarıyla harmanlayan Theon Cross, bugünün ve geleceğin cazına çok yakışan özgün ve özgür bir dil yaratıyor. Albümün zirve anlarından biri kuşkusuz Candace of Meroe. Theon Cross: Affirmations (Live At Blue Note New York)
The date was July 3, 2023, and the venue was one of jazz history’s legendary addresses: New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club. Young tuba virtuoso Theon Cross, born and raised in London, took the stage for his debut headline show. The audience already knew him as a core member of the Mercury Prize–nominated group Sons of Kemet, and the excitement was at its peak. Joining Cross on stage were his close friend Nikos Ziarkas on guitar and bass, powerhouse from Chicago James Russell Sims on drums, and tenor titan Isaiah Collier, a musician who has rightfully earned his place in the jazz pantheon. For those who couldn’t be in the room that night, there was consolation: this extraordinary performance was immortalized in the album Affirmations (Live At Blue Note New York), released via New Soil label.
That night, the band quite literally set the Blue Note stage ablaze. The concert recording captured a transformative moment in Theon Cross’s life. Which was an experience that left a profound mark on his artistic journey. It stands as a vital and inspiring milestone in his career, and thanks to the recording, we as the audiences across the ocean were able to witness this extraordinary musical miracle.
Guitarist Nikos Ziarkas is far more than a gifted player; he is the architect of atmosphere, weaving rich sonic textures that infuse his music with unique colors. On both guitar and bass, his contributions extend beyond creating an immersive soundscape—he delivers a rhythmic drive that elevates the entire ensemble, shaping the album with depth and vitality.
Cross first discovered Isaiah’s light at his 2022 concert in Chicago. He describes that moment as follows: “I had previously witnessed Isaiah’s brilliance at his own show in Chicago in 2022, and I recognized then that I was watching a young master with a distinctive sound, destined to become a modern legend. His mastery of the saxophone and his ability to draw from a wide range of influences both past and present created a deeply spiritual experience.”
Unfortunatelly I wasn’t there that evening; but lucikly when I recently saw Isaiah perform live, I found myself completely spellbound by the adrenaline and serotonin rush his music created. I listened to him with admiration, amazement, and rapt attention. Despite his young age, Collier seems to have embarked on a journey that reaches the limits of the universe. He possesses such talent and skill that he has the power to make a place for himself in any music genre he desires.
After Isaiah agreed to join the band, he and his manager Sonny suggested James Russell Sims for drums, known for his supernatural energy. From the very first rehearsal, they felt that the musical chemistry between them was anything but ordinary. James brought a deep understanding and respect for the musical message Cross wanted to convey; with his mastery spanning jazz to hip-hop and everything in between, the group found common ground and began to move freely and powerfully.
Sims’ volcanic energy, filled with danceable African rhythms and fiery solos, combined with Collier’s scream-realistic storytelling, resulted in a true jazz explosion.
In the track “Greetings” from the album “Affirmations (Live At Blue Note New York),” the quartet’s meditative intro rises like a sound cloud before a storm. Following this calm opening, Cross and Collier’s stream of consciousness, which continues breathlessly for minutes, deeply affected both the audience in the hall and me. The tuba, the largest member of the brass family, creates a mesmerizing effect with its agility in melodies divided by short, staccato breaths, and its depth in atmospheres built with long breaths. In this recording, we realize once again that the creative approach Cross brings to his instrument powerfully conveys this entire experience to us.
Cross, blends the grime rhythms of the British jazz scene, his groove-focused melodic approach, the energy of Afrobeat, and the first-class performances of master American jazz musicians to create an original and free language that perfectly suits the jazz of today and tomorrow. One of the album’s highlights is undoubtedly Candace of Meroe. Sims’s relentless energy on the toms and cymbals throughout the track, Cross’s sustained rhythmic flow, the melodic motifs sprinkled throughout, and Collier’s immense power unleashed until the very end combine to create a truly breathtaking performance.”
Every time I listened to the album, I was separately impressed by both the musical dialogue between them and the individual storytelling they created by retreating into their own inner worlds. Cross, Collier, Sims, and Ziarkis seem to take the spirit of jazz gods from the past and transform it into today’s music in this album; the result is a timeless yet contemporary jazz experience.
