Geçtiğimiz hafta Edition Records kurucusu ve CEO’su Dave Stapleton’dan bir e-posta aldım. Postasında son beş yıldır Dave Holland ile birlikte, Holland’ın kariyeri boyunca yaptığı olağanüstü müzikleri ve işbirliklerini kutlamak için büyük bir proje üzerinde yavaş yavaş çalıştığından ve sonunda bu projenin gerçeğe dönüştüğünün müjdesini vermek istediğinden bahsediyordu. Bahsi geçen Holland’ın başarılarla dolu kariyerindeki ilk kutu seti olan Freedom Call, efsanenin 80. doğum gününün ertesi günü, 2 Ekim‘de yayımlanacak.
Dave Holland’ın usta bir basçı olmasının yanında kompozitörlüğünün ve aranjörlüğünün de en nadide örneklerinden bazılarını canlı dinleyebilme şansı bulabileceğimiz için çok heyecanlanmıştım. Kayıtlar elime ulaşır ulaşmaz, aklımı başımdan alan bu canlı performansları ezberlercesine defalarca dinledim.
Son yıllarda arşivlerden çıkarılıp piyasaya sürülen yayımlanmamış kayıtlarla sıkça karşılaşıyoruz. Ancak dürüst olmak gerekirse, bu kayıtların bir kısmı ne müzikal açıdan tatmin edici ne de kayıt kalitesi bakımından yeterli. Üstelik, sanatçının hayatta olmadığı durumlarda bazı kayıtların mirasçılar tarafından ticari kaygılarla piyasaya sürüldüğünü düşünmeden edemiyorum. Bu kayıt asla bu türden kayıtlardan biri değil. Gerçekten muazzam kayıtlar.
Bu koleksiyon, Holland’ın efsanevi Quintet‘i, Mulgrew Miller’ın yer aldığı Sextet‘i ve deneysel Prism projesini içeren üç önemli topluluğun daha önce yayınlanmamış canlı kayıtlarını bir araya getiriyor. Albümlerin kapaklarında, 6 plak ve 3 CD’den oluşan bu özel toplama seriye görsel kimliğini kazandıran Edition Records estetiği, tasarımcı Oli Bentley’in imzasını taşıyan grafik çalışmalarıyla hayat buluyor.
NPR Recording Studio’da Scott Petito tarafından mixleri yapılan kayıtların masteringleri Steve Fallone tarafından Sterling Sound’da gerçekleştirildi. Sextet:Unity’de Holland’a Antonio Hart, Alex Sipiagin, Robin Eubanks, Mulgrew Miller ve Eric Harland eşlik etmiş. Holland, Quintet: Synergism’de Chris Potter, Robin Eubanks, Steve Nelson ve Nate Smith ile birlikte çalışmış. Prism: Freedom kaydında ise Dave Holland ile birlikte Kevin Eubanks, Craig Taborn ve Eric Harland’ı dinliyoruz.
Sextet: Unity
Dave Holland, 2004 yılında New England Kanservatuvarı’nda misafir sanatçı olarak davet edildiği sırada eğitim verdiği öğrenci grupları için bazı bestelerini yeniden düzenlemiş. Bu çalışma ona yeni düzenlemelerden bazılarını çalacak bir altılı grup kurmayı düşündürmüş. Meydana getirmeyi düşündüğü altılıda Alex Sipiagin, Antonio Hart ve Robin Eubanks’den oluşan bir nefesli üçlüsü vardı. Bu isimler daha evvel farklı orkestralarda birlikte çalmış, birbirini iyi tanıyan müzisyenlerdi. Bu enstrümantasyon, Holland’ın 1983’te kurduğu beşlinin ön hattını yansıtıyordu; Holland, albümün tanıtım metinlerinde bu kombinasyonu besteleme ve düzenleme olanakları açısından beğendiğinden bahsediyor.
Önceki beşli bas ve davuldan oluşan bir ritim bölümü kullanıyordu, ancak bu sefer ekibe bir de piyano eklemek istemişti. Holland, çalım tarzına büyük bir hayranlık duyduğu ve birkaç kez birlikte çalma şansı bulduğu piyanist Mulgrew Miller ile yeniden çalışmak istemişti. Grubu tamamlayan ise her zaman güçlü bir bağ hissettiği davulcu Eric Harland olmuştu.
Bu altılı ilk defa 2006’da Birdland Jazz’da bir haftalık etkinlik kapsamında yer aldı. Ardından 2007’de ABD’de verilen birkaç konser sonrası Pass It On albümünün kaydı yapıldı ve albüm 1 sene sonra yayımlandı. 2008’de Avrupa ve Amerika’da canlı çalınan performanslar ise “Sextet: Unity” kaydında dinlediğimiz bu kayıtlardı.
Quintet – Synergism
Grup içi sinerjinin albümün ateşleyicisi olduğunu düşündüğüm kayıtlardan Synergism kaydında yer alan 1997’de kurulan quintet 2010 yılına kadar turnelere çıkmıştı. Holland, grup üyelerini 1997 öncesinden de tanıyordu. Tromboncu Robin Eubanks, 1980’lerin ortalarında liderliğini yaptığı beşlisinin üyesiydi ve vibrafoncu Steve Nelson, 1992’de kurduğu dörtlünün bir üyesiydi. Steve Wilson’ın saksafonda yer aldığı Points of View albümünün ardından 1998’de Chris Potter bu grupta yer almaya başlamıştı. Nate Smith’de 2003’de davulu devralmıştı.
“Synergism” albüm adı grubun parçalarının toplamından daha büyük bir bütün oluşturduğunu simgeliyor; ortak müzikal değerler ile farklı bakış açıları birleşerek müziği ileriye taşıyan bir çeşitlilik yaratıyor. Bu grup, Holland’ın müziği gerçekten ileriye taşıyabilecek, kendi kimliğine sahip ve uzun ömürlü bir gruba sahip olma hayalini gerçekleştirmiş gibi görünüyor. Grubun tüm üyeleri repertuara katkıda bulunmuş ve grubun keşfedebileceği müzikal yönlerin yelpazesini önemli ölçüde genişleten özgün besteler getirmişler. 2010 yılında gerçekleşen performanslardaki parçalar sanki henüz bu sene kaydedilmiş kadar güncel ve çok sıkı.
Prism – Freedom
Dave Holland ve gitarist Kevin Eubanks ilk kez 1988 yılında tanışmış. Holland, onu Kanada’daki Banff Sanat Merkezi’nde öğretmenlik yapması için davet etmiş; o dönemde Holland, bu merkezdeki yaz caz atölyesinin yönetmenliğini yürütüyordu. Prova odasında ilk buluşmalarında aralarına güçlü bir müzikal bağ gelişmiş. Eubanks, performansın yapısını gerçek zamanlı olarak doğaçlama oluşturmuştu. O dönem Eubanks ile Steve Coleman ve Marvin “Smitty” Smith ile Extensions albümünü kaydettiler.
Aradan yıllar geçti, 2012 yılına gelindiğinde Dave Holland, Kevin Eubanks ve Eric Harland ile üçlü bir grup kurarak kulüplerde çalmaya başladılar. Holland’ın 1994 yılında James Carter ile yaptıkları bir kayıtta yer alan Craig Taborn’da gruba katılmıştı. Taborn, çok farklı türlerdeki müzikal dilleri ustaca kullanabilen bir doğaçlama ustası.
2012 yılında grup ilk prova için bir araya geldiklerinde grup üyeleri yanlarında kendi bestelerini getirmişti. Prism albümlerinin kaydının hemen ardından ABD ve Avrupa’da turneye çıktılar. Canlı performanslar sırasında yazılı bestelerin etrafında serbestçe süzülen bir doğaçlama atmosferi vardı. Girişler ve geçişlerde her performansta farklı oluyordu bu yüzden parçalar sürekli yeni bölümler yaratılarak genişletildi. 2014 yılındaki performanslardan derlenen bu kayıtlar o serbest ruhun bir yansıması.
Üç farklı konsept dönemsel ve müzikal yapıları bakımından birbirlerinden farklı ama ortak bir özellik taşıyorlar. Üçü de oldukça yüksek tempolu ve stüdyo kaydı kadar pürüzsüz ve akıcı kurgulanmış kayıtlar. Kayıtlarda yer alan her bir müzisyen formunun zirvesinde, kolektif sounda katkıları yanında bireysel soloları da muazzam. Robin Eubanks’in son derece doğal ve yaratıcı soloları, Kevin Eubanks’in zaman zaman blues’a dönen bazen ise bir progresif rock gitaristi kadar kudretli riffleri, Chris Potter’ın kariyerindeki en güzel icralarından bazıları bu kayıtlar içerisinde yer alıyor. In his message, he mentioned that for the past five years, he and Dave Holland had been gradually working on a major project to celebrate the extraordinary music and collaborations Holland has produced throughout his career, and that he wanted to share the good news that this project has finally come to fruition. Freedom Call, the first box set dedicated to Holland’s illustrious career, will be released on October 2nd the day after the legend’s 80th birthday

I was thrilled to have the chance to hear some of the finest examples of Dave Holland’s work as a composer and arranger, in addition to his mastery as a bassist. As soon as the recordings arrived, I listened to them over and over again. They completely blew me away.
Lately, we’ve become accustomed to the release of previously unreleased recordings. To be honest, I think some of these recordings which are unsatisfactory both musically and in terms of sound quality. They probably are released purely for commercial reasons. This recording is definitely not one of those. These are truly magnificent recordings! And in my humble opinion %100 genuine and musically satisfied guarientied.
This collection brings together previously unreleased live recordings from three major ensembles: Holland’s legendary Quintet, the Sextet featuring Mulgrew Miller, and the experimental Prism project. On the album covers, the Edition Records aesthetic which gives this special compilation series, consisting of 6 vinyl records and 3 CDs, its visual identity comes to life through graphic designs by Oli Bentley. In addition, you will receive 3 double-cover albums “each numbered out of a total of 550” along with a postcard signed by Dave Holland, album notes written by Dave Holland, and a special OBI sleeve.
The recordings, mixed by Scott Petito at NPR Recording Studio, were mastered by Steve Fallone at Sterling Sound. On ‘Sextet: Unity’, Holland was accompanied by Antonio Hart, Alex Sipiagin, Robin Eubanks, Mulgrew Miller, and Eric Harland. On ‘Quintet: Synergism’, Holland collaborated with Chris Potter, Robin Eubanks, Steve Nelson, and Nate Smith. On ‘Prism: Freedom’, we hear Dave Holland alongside Kevin Eubanks, Craig Taborn, and Eric Harland.
Sextet: Unity
While Dave Holland was invited as a guest artist at the New England Conservatory in 2004, he rearranged some of his compositions for the student groups he was teaching. This work led him to consider forming a sextet to perform some of the new arrangements. The sextet he envisioned included a wind trio consisting of Alex Sipiagin, Antonio Hart, and Robin Eubanks. These musicians had previously played together in various orchestras and knew each other well. This instrumentation reflected the front line of the quintet Holland had formed in 1983; in the album’s liner notes, Holland mentions that he favored this combination for its compositional and arranging possibilities.
Previously, he had used a rhythm section consisting of a five-piece bass and drums, but this time he wanted to add a piano to the lineup. Holland wanted to work again with pianist Mulgrew Miller, whose playing style he greatly admired and with whom he had had the chance to perform several times. Rounding out the group was drummer Eric Harland, with whom he had always felt a strong connection.
This sextet first performed as part of a week-long event at Birdland Jazz in 2006. Following several concerts in the U.S. in 2007, the band recorded the album “Pass It On”, which was released a year later. The live performances from 2008 in Europe and the U.S. are the recordings featured on “Sextet: Unity”.
Quintet – Synergism
The quintet, formed in 1997 and featured on the album “Synergism” which I believe was driven by the group’s internal synergy had been touring until 2010. Holland had known the group members even before 1997. Trombonist Robin Eubanks was a member of the quintet he led in the mid-1980s, and vibraphonist Steve Nelson was a member of the quartet he formed in 1992. Following the “Points of View” album, on which Steve Wilson played saxophone, Chris Potter joined the group in 1998. Nate Smith took over on drums in 2003.
The album title “Synergism” symbolizes that the group forms a whole greater than the sum of its parts; shared musical values and diverse perspectives come together to create a diversity that propels the music forward. This group seems to have realized Holland’s dream of having a
long-lasting band with its own distinct identity that can truly take Holland’s music to the next level. All members of the group have contributed to the repertoire and have brought original compositions
that significantly expand the range of musical directions the group can explore. This performances recorded in 2010 and they all sound as current and tight as if they had been recorded this year.
Prism – Freedom
Dave Holland and guitarist Kevin Eubanks first met in 1988 when Holland had invited him to teach
at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada where he was directing the summer jazz workshop. A strong musical bond developed between them during their first meeting in the rehearsal room. Eubanks had improvised the structure of the performance in real time. Around that time, they recorded the album “Extensions” with Eubanks, Steve Coleman, and Marvin “Smitty” Smith.
Years passed, and by 2012, Dave Holland had formed a trio with Kevin Eubanks and Eric Harland, and they began performing in clubs. Craig Taborn, who had appeared on a 1994 recording Holland made with James Carter, had also joined the group. Taborn is a master of improvisation who can skillfully employ musical languages across a wide range of genres.
When the band first got together for a rehearsal in 2012, the members brought their own compositions with them. Immediately after recording their album “Prism”, they went on tour in the U.S. and Europe. During their live performances, there was an atmosphere of free-flowing improvisation that weaved around the written compositions. The intros and transitions varied from performance to performance, so the songs were constantly expanded by creating new sections. These recordings, compiled from performances in 2014, reflect that free-spirited essence.
The eras and musical structures of these three distinct concepts differ from one another, yet they share a common trait. All three are quite fast-paced and crafted to be as smooth and fluid as studio recordings. Every musician featured on these recordings is at the peak of their art; in addition to their contributions to the collective, their individual solos are also extraordinary. Robin Eubanks’s incredibly natural and creative solos, Kevin Eubanks’s riffs (which at times veer into the blues and at others are as powerful as those of a progressive rock guitarist) and some of the virtuosic performances of Chris Potter’s career are all featured on these recordings. If you enjoy Holland’s albums such as “Pass It On”, “Points of View”, “Extended Play Live”, and “Prism”, as much I do so you’ll love these magnificent recordings.
